  • The Seed Sowing Thread - 2016

Its the start of the Growing year and we're all anxious to start sowing and feel soil beneath our fingernails. So how about telling us which seeds you've sown each day, as a gentle reminder to start rummaging for them in your seed stash

Not sown today, but the lemongrass seeds sown on Boxing Day are up today. I was expecting them to take much longer than that. They must be easier to grow than a lot of blurb would have you believe.

Well done Mothhawk. I sowed lemongrass in a heated propagator last January and they came up nicely. I'll be very interested to know how you get on with it. The only thing I found fiddly was arranging the pricked out seedlings into a sensible spacing in a larger pot. They're so delicate that it was easy to lose some. still, this is that pot now, currently overwintering in a blowaway. I'm hoping they'll thicken up nicely this summer.

They look good William. I thought I'd leave mine to grow in the 3" pot until it's full of roots, then divide into two, grow them on, and maybe divide again. I thought they'd probably be fiddly to prick out, being grassy plants.

Will they survive with just the shelter of a blowaway? I intended to keep mine indoors till June time, then put them out for summer, and back to the windowsill for next winter.

I do hope they'll survive. We've an occasional fungus gnat problem here, which makes me reluctant to bring the pot indoors, so with the temps dropping now I'll put some bubble wrap round it. I seem to remember reading they're quite happy down to 7 Celsius.

Seven varieties of sweet pea. I cheerfully followed instructions on the packet to sow half an inch deep (in pots), then remembered that for me they never grow like that. I usually chit them on kitchen roll in daylight. I find they need light to germinate.

So had to rummage through all the pots and haul as many seeds as I could find up to the surface again.

              Isn't seed sowing fun

Onions sown on 2nd - rijnsburger, ailsa craig, also some sweet peas and honeywort. It didn't get the itch out of my fingers though...
