  • An experiment with tatties..........

Last year as well as buying a couple of types of tatties seed, I also used some of my own tatties I'd kept from the previous year.
I planted up four 10 foot X 4 Foot beds with spuds but still had some mixed chitted spuds left.
Rather than chuck them I searched round for somewhere to put them and in the end stuck them in some fresh horse muck and wood shavings which i was rotting down for future use. The bed/muck heap was roughly 5 foot by 4 foot and i have just got round to harvesting them.
No spade or fork was necessary as the muck was friable and was well past the smelly stage, well rotted and full of worms. I harvested them with my hands only as the muck was only about 10 inches deep.
Out of all the tatties i have grown these were the best. Lovely and clean with no scab. Good sized spuds too.
Because we get this hoss muck for nowt I'm thinking of doing the same next year on twice the area. It was well worth doing it and utilised space that wouldn't have been used. The tatties in the muck were Desiree, Kestrel and Elfe.

Next year I might try my earlies in the muck for a change!
