    Mouse-proof spud storage

    OH came up from the garage with some spuds for dinner which have been nibbled. I suspect mice.

    I have 2 big sacks of spuds in there, can't bring them into my warm flat. Does anyone have any recommendations for mouse-proof storage?

    Am not setting traps or putting down poison - just looking for a means of keeping them out of the spuds.

    The only thing you could use is a wooden box with a well fitting lid anything else will make them sweat and sprout.

        I can't hang anything from the roof - is asbestos sheeting and the one rafter is not in the best nick.

        I was hoping a metal bin with a hefty lining of newspaper & a brick on the lid might work. Won't mice chew through wood?

          You could use live traps and release any mice caught several miles away

                Mice will chew through most things.
                Years ago, I laid up my Triumph Spitfire for the winter in the garage. One fine spring day, I took the car out for a spin and found I had company. Mice had made a nest inside the passenger seat!! They'd also filled the seat with peanuts from the bird food sack. I never worked out how they'd got into the car but there were lots more nuts in the boot.
                There are mice in the garage now, in the roof. I can hear them scuttling around when I go in there.

                  Maybe some wire mesh with tiny holes to wrap around the bags or double (triple) wrap so the holes get smaller as they overlap,then they can't chew through?

                    A plastic storage box, with lid. A few pounds. Should do the trick.

                        Why do you think it's mice and not rats?

                        Any food stored outside entices vermin here. I just can't get rid of them I kep chicken feed, and spuds outside. Wooden box would be ideal, but my spuds I just store in a plastic recycling box with lid. Check everyday. As AP suggest, use live traps or you will be over run in no time.

                          Whilst mice do chew it will also make a difference on the type of mouse. If they are long tailed mice then they have come in to be warmer for winter and are making the most. Can you see any droppings any where?

                          I would have thought a metal or plastic bin would be fine. Just leave them in the sacks and keep a check on them

                            Mice will chew through plastic as they did with a cool box I had in my plot shed. Chewed up all the insulation too.

                              Mice and rats will chew anything any food left outside is fair game but as roitelet has said - it takes more time to get through plastic, steel bins etc. The more often they are disturbed the better so daily checks should help if there's no storage option in the house and Sparrow wants the vermin unharmed.
