    New Veg grower

    Hi Guys, I'm new to growing, like really new. I once failed at keeping a bonsai tree alive and managed a massive haul of 4 strawberries from my first foray into food growing, my strawberry plant.

    I am however really keen to grow my own food, I have a huge garden and an increasing amount of time.

    Do you guys have any tips on what i could plant now that I would be able to grow fairly easily in my garden??

    Hey there. We all start somewhere. I started with tiny lettuces on my kitchen window in half milk cartons. Onions sets and garlic are simple enough. You could get a little poly tunnel cloche to protect them if you want. Otherwise, broad beans and peas are easy, as long as you can stop the birds eating them first.

      Welcome to the Vine. I am also new to growing things. I've never been able to keep any houseplant alive but seem to do better outdoors.

      Lambs Lettuce salad leaves are supposed to be easy to grow and can be sown at this time of year. I think there are winter lettuces too that you can look for. Lettuces are pretty easy if you can keep pigeons and slugs off - they really need netting outside or grown under cloche or polytunnel.

      This is the time of year for onions and garlic for harvesting next year - no idea whether they are easy to grow or not.
      LOVE growing food to eat in my little town back garden. Winter update: currently growing overwintering onions, carrots, lettuce, chard, salad leaves, kale, cabbage, radish, beetroot, garlic, broccoli raab, some herbs.

          Hello and welcome to the vine Whellpower go and take some photos! Photos of your growing area would help unfortunately you have landed amongst a very nosey bunch.
          They will want to know
          Where abouts you are (this will help with when you can plant your stuff out, frost dates etc)
          What do you like to eat?
          How much space are you going to have for growing your fruit and veg.
          Will you be making new growing beds or are they already there?

          Garlic is a great start if you like it and if you really want to show off try getting in some elephant garlic cloves to plant now. Pop along to your local farmers market or farm shop and pick a few bulbs up now and you can get those in this weekend.

            As others have said , garlic and over wintering onions and broad beans world be a big start for you....and not difficult to grow...
            I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

              Welcome! I am a newbie too - and have previously been disastrous at keeping any kind of plant alive for long... I even managed to kill heather?!

              Anyway - I've somehow found vegetables much easier and much more enjoyable!! As you will learn from here, things have bad years and good years, but your successes will always make everything worthwhile!

              Lettuce, courgettes and radishes are easy and fast come spring time. For now I'd definitely recommend some garlic and onions - once they're in they dont really need any attention at all. Just make sure you're planning space wise - i.e. that you wont have used up all the space you will need come spring time.

              You will learn so fast - keeping reading, googling and most importantly of all, asking questions on here and you'll be confident and expert in no time!

                  Definitely agree with your last bit. I'm still pretty new to gardening, only been growing stuff for the last 3 seasons and i always try something new every spring and all i ever seem to do is ask questions on here, but everyone on here is very helpful.

                      Won't be long before you are in too deep .I've done my first year on the alotment started growing radish and beetroot.
                      12 month later ive got 3 greenhouses a new 6 meter polytunnel on the way and an obsession with winning .

                        Go on then I'll be the nosy one, if you could put your general area (nearest town say) in your profile it would really help when giving advice.

                        The advice for say the north of Scotland would be very different for here in the midlands and different again for the south coast.

                              The wonderful thing about gardening is it can be as easy and small as you want to massive and ridiculous as you want. You will find it very helpful on here
                              I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them
