    Overwintering onions

    A quick bit of advice, please ... I sowed these Japanese onions in late August in the cold greenhouse and they've made faster progress than I expected. Question is, should I plant them out in the allotment later this month or should I try and keep them until spring and plant out then?

    Last year I left some in the greenhouse but the grey mould got them, so I'm tempted to put them out and let them take their chances. Any support for this?

    My understanding is that Japanese onions should (can) be overwintered, so I'd put them outside. They seem to survive up on t'moor for us. I would expect even in a cold greenhouse they'll be too comfy!

    Did you sow them from seed? Look nice and healthy to me, I always use sets and they'll be in next month.

    As usual someone who knows what they're on about will be along shortly...

      Thats a tough call Martin. As Chippy said they are looking very healthy but still frail looking to take a winter battering.
      If they were mine I would be inclined to keep them in the cold greenhouse.
      But what do I know, I always use sets.
