  • Hanging up tomatoes to ripen

First time I've done this and they taste just as good as when left in the ground.

So Jonny, do you just literally cut off the stem complete with tomatoes and hang them off a hook? And where's the best place to do this? Room temperature ok??

      Hi Susie,
Yes to cutting off and hanging up, mine are in the conservatory.

As I said it's the first time I've done this and I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along with more advice

Surely they need to have already started to turn before you can do this?

When I did this a few years ago, they weren't turning red at all, they were totally green with no chance of reddening. I dug up the plants so the root was intact, shook out all the soil & worms & hung them upside down by my fish tank indoors, they didn't get much daylight (not next to a window) but they had warmth. I didn't spray the roots with water,I think you can if you don't mind mess, mine were in a difficult place. The sun thins the skins, mine had tougher skins. It's good to experiment with different ways. Good luck!

Like Scoot said, if they as green as grass it won't work but if they have started to look a little yellowy/green it seems to do the trick.
Good luck anyway if your'e giving it a try.

They taste better doing it this way Scoot, I would imagine that they are still getting nutrients from the stalk.

And I can confirm that even the really green ones are also gradually ripening up

So you cut the whole stalk down with all the tomatoes on still and then hing them up somewhere?

                  Like in my growhouse?

I may give that a go and hing them in my growhouse as it's starting to look a little grim for my outside tomatoes now. I havn't had any yet. Thanks for the tip.

Just done this with the outdoor tomatoes. Hung them in my grow house. Will let you all know the outcome.
