  • Woolly Aphid Resistant Apple trees

In my garden i have a small apple tree that's badly affected by woolly aphids so i am going to chop it down and replace it with another apple tree what are good small eating apple trees that are resistant to woolly aphids ????

There are varieties which have what appears to be resistance to woolly aphid but I would have concerns that they might not have enough scab or canker resistance for what I imagine is a wet climate.

Also use a rootstock with woolly aphid resistance to avoid the tree being 'hit below the belt' and the roots destroyed. The rootstocks MM106, M116 and MM111 have some resistance.

Scion varieties which appear to have some resistance are:

    Beauty of Bath
    Gascoyne's Scarlet
    Gladstone
    Golden Delicious
    Gravenstein
    Irish Peach
    Jupiter
    Spartan
    Tydeman's Early Worcester
    Winter Gem
    Winter Majetin

But they may not be 100% resistant in all areas due to regional variations in woolly aphid strains.
The best term to use would be 'less likely to be severely attacked' than most varieties.

They may also not have enough resistance to scab or canker for your wetter climate.

Possibly they will not like a cooler climate so may not grow or fruit well.

Finally there's the problem of what to do with a whole tree load of early-ripening apples which will only keep for a couple of weeks after being picked.

Woolly aphids are more likely to attack a tree in a very sheltered semi-shaded spot, or a tree which has had major pruning.
