  • Lily Beetles

I planted some lilies in a pot last year, and they were fantastic I managed to over winter them and they cam back with loads more shoots and flowers. I was so impressed. BUT then they got the beetles. They still continued to flower. But now all the leaves have sort of rotted and am just left with stalks. Can I salvage the bulbs or should I just bin the lot

Save the bulbs Bal & fingers crossed they will come back next year. Lily beetles are a PITA.

Thanks Bigmally. I really wanted to keep them if at all possible. Will they be able to store enough goodness for next year with no leaves on the stems?

It may result in undersized bulbs which may not flower next year according to RHS:

I never used to get the beetles but since the first year of them I now get them every year and have given up on lilies. Too much of a pain.

Replant the bulbs in fresh compost with as little of the old as possible. The larvae pupate in the soil. Next year watch them like a hawk and squash any beetles you see (double points for a mating pair!). Inspect the undersides of the leaves for eggs, rust coloured, and as soon as there are any signs of damage try and find the lavae and wipe them off. They usually start nibbling from the tip of the leaf. You won't get rid of them completely but you will control them.

Can't you tell, I love lilies!!

If you have cats (as your avatar suggests), keep them well away from any lillies!

Why should you keep cats away from lilies?

I didn't know that. I have had the lilies two years in a row and the cats don't seem to go near them but the flowers are in pots in the back garden where the cats wander around. Are the poisonous to them?

Watch mine carefully and spray with Provado systemic as soon as beatle damage seen. Seems to work.

                        They go for frittilarias too.

As for killing cats, that linked article says "Lilies aside, cat owners should also be wary of cyclamen, poinsettia, amaryllis, holly, ivy, mistletoe daffodils and foxgloves, to name a few. Laburnum, some berries and toadstools can also occasionally cause problems." Why isn't my garden full of corpses?!

Yes, really quite nasty although even if you avoid them in your own garden you can't keep your cats away from them elsewhere so I don't worry too much.
