  • A bit of a dilema

    Hi,
My mom and dad have just got a plot at an allotment site by them. Its a secure site with a guy there most of the day with tea making facility, somewhere to sit and meet other plot holders, a little shop and a secure place to store all your tools.
I know they have several plots vacant and to admit the truth I love the place. Its about another 1.5 miles in the opposite direction to my site. The people there are really nice. My mom and dad were struggling lifting something and a guy just appeared and helped them out. Then a lady that was passing gave them some of her excess fruit and veg.
They also have free manure, woodchip and pallets that are dropped at a regular intervals.
At my present site the public have a footpath through, no community spirit, I can go for days without seeing anyone down there and you are lucky to get a hello from other plot holders.
I am in two minds whether to move across to my mom and dads site. I know I have put three years in at my present site but I don't want to feel that I begrudge going to the allotment and then hate going.
    What to do?
    Thanks
    sigpic

Go for it NVG. You know you want to. When it stops being enjoyable & becomes a chore, it's time for a change. Your parents site sounds lovely.

Move over to the other place, life is too short. Us novices need advice from veterans as well.

We did something similar and moved closer to the Mrs parents but ended up in a grimmer, hardbitten village nearer a city with less opportunities then near the capital where we were happier. We thought bugger it and moved back to near where we used to live after a couple of years, much happier in a village with a bit more community spirit, feasts, chess club in the pub etc

Sticking things out for the sake of it can be a waste of time, the gardening should be enjoyed not dreaded as a chore.

If there are plots to get then go for it,both you and the children will see more of your parents as well, just as long as you will be happy changing and starting again, also what size plots and rent compared to what you have now, when does your rent start and end, maybe go with your parents to help them and see how things are on there for a while, but this time off year is good for getting preps done for next.

I'm another who says Go for it. Sounds perfect in all respects.
Start taking cuttings of fruit bushes, or digging them up and repotting ready for the move.

I think you have already made up your mind, ok you have spent 3 years getting your present site up to scratch, but is'nt that the fun of it? Now you can have that same fun all over again.

Yep, I would move too. Community spirit and all those other things are a bonus. I would like to be on the same site as parents/ friends/ decent allotmenteers as you can help each other out when needs be. The only neg. is a bit more of a trek. Starting from scratch isn't an issue as you have an idea of how to make it better next time

NG if you aren't enjoying the site you are on then no matter how closer it is it's still going to feel like a bigger trek than the other place sounds.

Id say go for it. Not only do you get a better sounding site you get to put into play all those ideas you've been thinking of and use the experience and knowledge gained in setting up your new perfect plot.

Plus we all get to look at the before, during and after photos and you know how nosey us lot are.

I'd move too. Gardening is much more than just sticking a fork in the ground.

                      I'd go for it too.
I wouldn't hesitate sounds perfect, especially if you have a choice of plots.

Having moved sites twice I can understand the reluctance to walk away from all that hard work...and any cost involved.
Take with you what you can if that's possible....you presumably would have a plot at each site so you could move in stages until the end of the year!

From reading your post I can't see any reason why you should not move. Having a new allotment and seeing more of your parents...what could be better

I had a similar dilemma and mine just involved moving within the site! Yes I had worked hard on the old plot but I was fed up with my neighbours and was further away from the water. I did move when one came up and never looked back. Autumn is a good time for moving fruit bushes etc. so all is not lost. I would sign up for one on the new site, start working it and preparing to move and then you can take your time moving. That's always assuming the rent's not due on your current plot soon.
Good luck - you won't regret it.
