  • Brewing advice needed

    Hi All

I was about to start another home brew beer but it says I need to ad 1Kg of dextrose sugar.

We don't have a dedicated brewing shop in town so can I substitute anything else for dextrose?

In stead of making kit up to 5 gallons make it up to 4 gallons and use 1/2 (half) kg of white sugar. Beer will taste better and be same strength it is meant to be.

It is just a beer kit I picked up at the range because it was cheap. I think it was £10 on special offer.

            This one

that looks a decent kit thanks for the link ,cheers p.s.please let us no how you get on with it when its done ,have you made any before ? if not leave it longer in the bottles than the 5 mins they claim on the adverts ,not sure why they say it can be ready as early as 21 days cos when people try it it then puts them off doing any more, good luck

I did a Kilner Bitter kit last month for the launch of our geodesic dome and it went down really well. The only problem was I put it in a barrel and having to let air in the top to let the beer out has contaminated the remainder of the beer so that is now going in our slug traps.

I have now bought bottles for this one.

nice ,i have a couple of barrels and i`ve bought some different screw caps for them which you can inject co2 into the barrel so you dont have to take the screw cap off to let any air in ,the new caps cost £20 and the co2 bulbs cost £4 for 10 and you use about 2-3 bulbs per barrel,i got mine from wilkos but there are on loads of homebrew websites that have them aswell, cheers

Can I ask why you opened the top of the barrel? There should have been enough pressure in the top of it to dispense the beer without letting air in.

when i tried it i put 80grms(iirc) of suger in the barrel for secondary fermentation and got about 6 pints then the pressure droped and it stopped coming out so i had to take the top off and drink all the rest before it went off, cracking weekend from what i remember
