The soil where my early potatoes have been is so beautifully fine to a good depth it seems logic to me to put carrots there next year. Is there any reason this is a bad idea? Internet advice says its usual to follow potatoes with beans. And which green manure would be a good choice before the carrots ? (Presuming theres not a glaringly obvious reason carrots cant go there!) Thanks all !

I think you may have been looking at a three year rotation system
if you were to adopt the four year it would suit your needs better 
Year one
Section one: Legumes
Section two: Brassicas
Section three: Potatoes
Section four: Onions and roots
Year two
Section one: Brassicas
Section two: Potatoes
Section three: Onions and roots
Section four: Legumes
Year three
Section one: Potatoes
Section two: Onions and roots
Section three: Legumes
Section four: Brassicas
Year four
Section one: Onions and roots
Section two: Legumes
Section three: Brassicas
Section four: Potatoes

The only thing I can think of would be that, as spuds are also roots, the phosphorus level may be low - some bonemeal or super phosphate would sort that out.

I follow bearded blokes suggested rotation. I slot in sweetcorn/courgettes/squash/salads where ever I can but avoid the place they were the previous year. Some leave two years between crops but I don't like doing that.
For green manures I sow mustard seed on empty spots where the brassicas are for digging in in the spring. For the other sections I use clover or buckwheat or Hungarian rye grass on empty spots. The one to watch is the mustard seed as it is part of the brassica family.
the one puzzle I have is the leeks. I prefer to put them in the potato bed but not where the potatoes were. This works for me but not sure how it would work for others.
