  • A Glossary of Vine Abbreviations and Phrases

    Welcome to the Grapevine Glossary of Phrases and Abbreviations that may puzzle you if you're new to the Forum - or to gardening..

    Knowledgable Grapes - please post definitions here to help Newbies

    Newbies - please add any abbreviations/expressions that you don't understand and we'll tell you what they mean

    Armpits - side shoots of tomatoes

    BER - Blossom End Rot - the rotting black end of tomatoes caused by erratic watering
    BFB - Blood fish and bone, alternative ordering
    Blowaway - (1) cheapy mini plastic greenhouse thingy (2) a temporary greenhouse consisting of a polythene cover over a tubular metal frame - often resembling a tent, known for its susceptibility to winds.
    Bolt - the unwanted flowering of a plant i.e lettuces, oriental veg, rhubarb
    Bulbil - small bulbs which grow from the flower heads of certain alliums

    CACA - Cut and come again - usually salad leaves like lettuce than can be cut, leaving the roots in situ which will grow again.
    CFB - Climbing French Bean
    Chitting - getting spuds to sprout shoots prior to planting
    Christmad = Christmas

    Dalek - a type of bin used to make your own compost.
    Determinate = bush tomatoes
    DFB - Dwarf french bean
    DH ....dear husband

    FBB - Fish, blood, bone
    Furtle - having a rummage in the soil to check if your potatoes are ready to harvest.
    FYM = Farm yard Manure

    GC = Garden Centre
    GH = GreenHouse
    GR - Gardeners Rest, our virtual pub that opens at christmas See #24
    Grape - a person who uses this forum
    GW - Gardeners World

    Half-runner beans = French beans that can't make their minds up and grow to 3-4ft high
    Haulms - potato stems and foliage
    HSL - Heritage Seed Library, part of Garden Organic who promote and preserve rare heritage varieties
    Hutton Period - a period of warmish, high humidity weather than can suggest blight is on its way - Hutton replaced Smith period as the indicator in 2017

    Indeterminate = cordon = vine tomatoes

    JA - Jerusalem artichokes
    JI - John Innes compost

    Kite - Blowaway Tunnel

    Layering (lasagne bed) - a way of placing different materials on top of one another to build up a bed i.e cardboard, kitchen waste, shredded paper, spent compost etc. etc.
    Layering - pegging a branch to the ground so it roots and you have a new, free plant

    M27,M9,M26,M106,M111 and M25 - All types of apple rootstock. See #16
    MFB Morrisons Flower Bucket, or any other Florists Buckets', often given away or sold 8 for a £1.
    Mods - forum moderators also known as scary people with pointy sticks
    Mom - Member Of The Month
    MPC = Multi Purpose Compost

    Nutter = Nutter!!

    OH...other half

    PSB = Purple Sprouting Broccoli
    PT - Polytunnel

    RHS - Royal Horticulture Society
    Rootstock - Most commonly used when talking about fruit trees. It is a root that is usually grafted to a scion for various reasons but the main reason (for fruit trees) is to govern overall size.

    SAE - Stamped addressed envelope
    Scape - flower bud on an allium eg onion, garlic, leek. Usually removed as a sign of bolting. - See Bolt
    Scion - Cutting material which is grafted to a rootstock. Most often used when talking about fruit trees
    SFG - Square foot gardening. A method in which to get maximum crops from an area
    Slimes/Slimies ...slugs and snails
    Smith Period - a period of warmish, high humidity weather than can suggest blight is on its way - see Hutton period
    Snugs - Snails & Slugs
    SWMBO - She Who Must Be Obeyed

    TPS - True potato seed (actual seed), not to be confused with seed potato which is in fact just a potato that gets planted.

    Vine (grapevine) - term used to refer to this forum
    VSP - Virtual Seed Parcel , http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...cel_83432.html for swapping seeds
    VVS ...the Virtual Vine Show.. was held every year over the summer months and into Autumn where peeps show off their produce!
    Weed - unwanted plant or plant in the wrong place
    WSB = White Sprouting Broccoli

      Can you tell I struggled with what half of you were on about when I joined. The growing bits were fine

      Dalek - although not an abbreviation I feel someone might be too scared to ask. It is a type of bin used to make your own compost.

                    I thought HSL were the 'chairs for old people' company who sponsor all the nice English murders on the telly...

                          Well that is a silly abbreviation - silly seed people. It is also the Health and Safety Laboratory Although I do like gardening from a nice comfy chair

                          Edit: Ok, now I see why my hubby says I speak a load of gobbledygook when I talk gardening and vine.
