    Hi All

When I lift my onions is it ok to cut most of the green stalk (if that is the right word)

Some of then are going bad hence the early removal

    Many thanks

Lift them on a dry day if possible and leave them on the bed to dry for as long as possible before cutting the leaves back

If they are going bad I wouldn't wait for them to dry out, they won't keep any way under normal storage conditions.

I would use them as quickly as possible and those that I couldn't use I would freeze for use in soups etc.

Use now is good advice but those you can't still take them up now. If some sunshine appears, dry them out.

What exactly is wrong the onions?

Funny I should have replied to this thread, inspected my white onions today and guess what. Same problem SWMBO is in the kitchen right now making her onion soup recipe which will be frozen along with any remaining onion for those cold winter days.

Fortunately I only grow a few whites just for SWMBOs soup and my reds seem to be unaffected.
