  • has my sweetcorn bolted??

    hello all!

I'm growing minipop sweetcorns, which loks to be doing really well and healthy BUT they've grown like a reed thing at the top - this wasnt what I was expecting! Is this what will turn in to the pollen / flower or have they bolted?

Apologies the pictures arent great it was getting dark

    Thanks!

that is where the pollen comes from.
the silks is were the pollen goes and where corn cobs develop.
    Bolting is synonym for flowering.

Don't worry. You need them to flower - which is what bolting is.
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
      Pumpkin pi.

You don't want Minipop to get pollinated - I always cut the tassels off the tops of the plants just to make sure. The cobs are cut off to eat while the silks are still green

The only thing is I dont have any cobs showing yet... will cutting off the tops hurt the growth?

As long as you are sure it's Mini pop - All I can say is that is what I do to mine, with no problems.

Mini prop is meant to be ready to eat when the silks on the top of the cob appear (in the video they are actually quite long). This should be very soon after the male tassels have come out so in theory you don't need to cut the male flowers off but it is insurance, especially if you don't get to your plot every day or are working around weather that might stop you harvesting.
