Late July - What to sow from seed

I'm still planting salad veg... radishes, spring onions, beets, carrots and cut and come again lettuce. I am waiting for the 'hot' (yes I know) period to pass before I plant more spinach. I'm also starting to plan my autumn sowing now. I've just sown leeks and purple sprouting broccoli - slightly late but worth a go... I dont pay too much attention to the 'rules' - just chuck it in and see what happens!

Hello Kennethc,

If you have a look for the 'seed sowing thread' (it's round here somewhere..possibly in vegging out?) you'll get lots of ideas from what everyone else is sowing this week.

I'm in London and this week I've sown seeds of;
carrots (some direct, some in morrisons buckets)
Dwarf french beans
cimi de rapa, sometimes called rapini....a quick maturing calabrese type veg.
Bulb fennel.
Spring onions
Hispi cabbage
and lots of mixed beetroot.

I've also sown some flowers that bloom in their second year;
Foxgloves
Forget me nots
Sweet williams
Hollyhocks.

Mooli and Mooli.

Sowed two types today, Neptune and Mino Early .

Ah luv mooli me!

PS In case Veggiechicken reads this she once asked me what variety of Mooli I usually grow. The belated answer is Neptune, which I've had excellent results from , sown at this time of year.

I've been sowing oriental greens - komatsuna, mibuna, pak choi and choy sum. Next on the list are kohlrabi and mizuna.

These things are astonishing - I sowed the first 4 on Monday outdoors in a pot, with a clear plastic lid on and they have already germinated.

I keep reading that people are still sowing beetroot but I've only just harvested the ones I sowed around the beginning of April. It has always taken me the best part of four months to grow them(I say "always", I've grown them twice before this, lol), is that longer than the norm? And do you grow them under cover later in the season????

I just bung them in and hope for the best to be honest!

I sow lots and lots....I seem to 'accrue' beetroot seed....and harvest them from ping pong ball sized up. If you sow squillions you can take a dozen little ones to roast and that encourages the ones either side to get bigger.
Also, April was horribly cold.
Beets sown this time of year romp away!

Might sow some more carrots and beetroot today. Last sowing of the year I reckon.
