  • Pruning First Year Goji Bush

    Good morning all,

I have done a bit of searching but can't find a pro/con list for this one.

I have a Goji bush that i planted a few months back, which is in its first year. It's growing very well at around 6ft too tied to canes, and then some. Above the 6ft canes stems are still growing and, if lifted up and measured, measure around 7-8ft tall already.

As the canes i have are around 6ft tall, as the stems continue to grow i have nothing to tie them too and so are starting to dangle over.

I'm not offended by this, but would it be best to trim these long stems back to around the 6ft point, or allow them to continue to grow, and dangle?

    Thanks,
    Jack

Whilst it is so young it will do no harm to prune it. They tend to fruit after 3 years at which point you want to tie back as much of the foliage as pos. or devise a pruning regime as they fruit on the previous years growth. Also don't get too excited at this stage about the taste of the fruit

Edit: Hi and welcome to the vine

Thanks very much for the info and the warm welcome!

It's definitely useful advise, as i'd read in a few places that you should avoid pruning in the first year.
It's good to know that I can prune if the plant gets a bit out of control.

      Thanks again!
      Jack
