    Hen calling quite loud

    Last night one of our hens started calling really loudly and we would love to know why. We know they were safe as we checked (panicked) when she started but she was just stood calling. Is this part of them getting their hierarchy or does it show that she finally may be ready to lay the first egg or is it something else??

    Two of my hens are particularly stooooopid & will shout at nearly anything a strange movement (usually a bird in a shrub), a bucket where it wasn't last time they looked, I've laid an egg, etc

      I have a noisy one too. She will shout loudly for any reason. A bird flying overhead or another hen in the nest box she wanted or for no apparent reason at all. My OH calls her the mad hatter.

                Do you find that when one starts, all the others like to join in? I think it's a particularly noisy year here for some reason, they're still shouting when they lay an egg (usually only do that for a short time after they come back into lay), and we seem to be getting group egg celebrations! And the other night after they were all locked up, the whole lot of them went bonkers - we unlocked everything to see what was wrong - nothing there! Think it was just perch politics or something. Bizarre!

                  One of the others did start for a minute but it just seemed to mainly be one. There was nothing different, the one conclusion we came up with besides it being normal was that a few pigeons were about so maybe it was them that set her off.

                    We got some new birds and they have no concept of privacy - one of the hens was going off at great volume and it was because one of the new australorpe's was pacing back and forth in front of her nest box, gives new meaning to stalking.
