  • Is it too late to replant?

Disaster - someone's dog, I think? Has dug up and smashed all my squash and courgette plants and my cucumbers and parsnip bed (and a flowerbed). Only one looks like it will bounce back. I'm pretty upset! Is it too late to plant replacements? I'm not hopeful about getting winter squash now but maybe summer squash...? Maybe I'll still get some baby parsnips?

Are you sure it's a dog? They aren't generally interested in plants.
Too late for parsnips, I wouldn't bother with winter squash but courgettes will give you plenty before the first frosts. Do you know any other gardeners, they may have spare plants which will be quicker than starting from seed. Or pop to theGC.

I gave 3 cues away last week. Look on freecycle?

I'm sure I've read about people putting in courgettes etc about now... any in your local garden centres?

I'm so sorry, that's awful. I'd be proper upset. Sympathies.

I sowed some courgettes last week as my plants were pathetic. The seeds have already germinated. Try it - nothing to lose

It's horrible when that sort of thing happens but, as VC said, you haven't really got anything to loose if you have the seeds. My courgette (planted out in April) still isn't up to much but I am ever optimistic.

'Are you sure it's a dog? They aren't generally interested in plants.'

Well I think it was a dog, not sure what else it could have been. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the local foxes or cats, looks like someone/thing had a whale of a time digging up beds and rolling on things. I saw a loose dog around there a few weeks ago too. Fortunately it left my fruit bushes, spuds and salads alone.

I'll whack some courgettes in and see if anyone has any surplus plants then.

I might even just stick my leftover parsnips in anyway since the seeds not going to be used otherwise. A neighbour says she planted some mid-June last year and got a crop of baby snips, so, might as well see what happens.

              Thanks guys!

                    Badgers maybe?
I'd try asking around for spare plants - i've just composted the last of my spares (courgettes, w.squash and cucumbers) that couldn't be homed.
And if you still have parsnip seeds, why not sow them anyway as they'll probably be no good for next year. My fourth attempt have just germinated this week!

As the others say have a look around, G.C's close to me still have cucumber, courgette & BNS seedlings on sale

chit your parsnip seeds, they are so slow to germinate and i have had them rooting in a week better than the usual 3
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

Something like rocket can be grown from seed now and still give you a harvest in a short space of time.

Still vegetable plants around to buy and plant out. With plenty of water and feed ... Still time.
