  • Hello from Birmingham

As I've been lurking for a few weeks, I thought it'd be polite to introduce myself and say hello.

I used to do a fair bit of gardening, years ago, but mostly ornamentals. The garden got severely over grown while I was unable to get out there, with brambles and ivy invading from neighbours gardens. I've spent the past two years excavating the back jungle and it now slightly resembles a garden again. I'm keen to grow as many veggies for the kitchen and freezer as I can. If I can't eat it, apart from a few companion plants, I don't want to grow it.

I've built some raised beds and am trying square foot gardening this year. I'm getting on with it ok so far, but I do wish the weather would make its mind up. More nasty cold and wet weather headed our way for the weekend. Sigh.

Hello from north Birmingham, CL! Well done for getting your garden whacked into shape - what do you have in your square foot (feet?) spaces?

Hello Carolet - I'm glad you are no longer a lurker and have joined our happy band of growers.

I bet sorting your overgrowth out was a bit of a work out?

I also do a bit of SFG as it allows me to grow a little of many things to help feed the two of us.

Before anybody else asks, and they will, any chance of pictures because we are a nosy bunch on here and love seeing how other Grapes do things.

Thank you for the very warm welcome

I'll get some better photos taken soon and add them to the raised bed thread but I do have a photo of two of the beds, with netting over to foil whichever critter was digging in them.

So far I've got carrots, turnips, radish, lettuce, pak choi, french beans & runner beans, lots of tomatoes, squash and courgettes, peppers and chillis and some cucumber. Most of them are in the square foot garden, apart from the tomatoes, cucumber and squash. Those are in the greenhouse or various containers scattered to taste
