Martin is your man on "mums" he may be able to answer. I stopped mine on the 30th but I don't have any any other side shoots. Perhaps a photo would help? How tall are they?

Hi Sharples, welcome to the vine!

I'm afraid Scarlet's confidence in me is misplaced. This is my first year of trying to grow them "properly" so I'm still learning and experimenting.

The exhibition growers will only keep between 2 and 4 strong stems to get the best flowers.
Because you will only have one of each colour this season I would leave them alone this season and see what they do. Worst case is two magnificent blooms on each plant.

If you overwinter them and take cuttings, next year you can have lots of plants and experiment on some of them!

A proper expert will probably be along in a minute.

Not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I watched a neighbouring gardener coo and coddle his Xanths all of last year. He had a greenhouse and an outside crop.

He grows them like a tomato. A single shoot, up a cane, pinching out all side shoots and only lets them develop 1 flower. It's an impressive flower but unless you are showing them I'm not sure they look great that way. It always looks a bit too forced and regimented for my liking. But each to their own.
