  • Guerilla Tomato Plant Growing

I have had a mad idea, crazy some might say.

I currently don’t have much direct sunshine into my back garden, my front garden is north facing. Last year I had 5 pots stolen from my front garden so I can’t really place pots or plants there for the time being, one of the idea and one thing I really want to do is grow some tomatoes. I have found a secluded and very sunny location near to my house which is directly south facing, its on an elevated platform which is close to a public pathway but far enough to be unnoticeable. I want to grow some tomatoes there, probably 6 or so squat types so they will not be noticed from the public pathway and also grown in grow bags as there is no soil where I will be growing from. They will need to survive the outdoors. Has anyone got any recommendations of plants, where I can get them and any tips/feedback ? It would be all very welcome.

Time is of the essence I am aware so getting plants would be needed to be done as soon as possible I think !

    Thanks,

    Tom

They will need watering everyday. How many people pass? Is it where people walk dogs? If it is, they may well enjoy your produce

I'm confused! Do you mean you'd be planting them in grow bags in this "secluded location"?

I think it is a fantastic idea....but then, I'm prone to a little guerilla gardening myself!

I think the first thing to really get your head around is that the moment you plant them in a public space, they cease to be your own.
If you arrive to find them stolen....how gutted will you be?
Will you be able to shrug it off?
Tell yourself that at least someone got the benefit?

If not, quit while you're ahead. You'll send yourself mad. Watching passers by suspiciously and getting paranoid.

If you think you can 'enjoy the process' as they say, then go for it.
If you know anyone else that grows toms....nick their armpits (so to speak) then if it goes all wrong you've lost nowt but a couple of cheap growbags and your time.
Any plants you grow there will be stumpy! And that's okay because they'll be open to the elements, squirrels foxes and cats.....and of course humans. You'll want them tough and frankly, not too attractive!

And it is entirely possible that someone will notice what you are doing and join in with the watering etc

As an aside....can put window boxes where you are?

Yes they would be grown in the secluded location, no dogs can get there as it is elevated and I can pass every day - it's on the way to work. I don't think anyone goes there, in fact I am fairly certain !

....as a side note, my confidence in the location is pretty good so I am willing to take a risk. Does anyone have a website where I can get some garden ready plants ? I feel like I may be a little late, space is not available to sow at home.

B&Q are selling tomato plants at present - about 80p I think - limited varieties though.
