  • cockerel attacking hen

Morning. I just had a message from a friend of mine who's having a problem with her birds and I thought you might be able to help please - here's a copy of the message:

"Our cockerel has started attacking one of our hens, she was a bit off colour for a few days, runny bottom, loosing feathers but seems better now. We noticed a few days ago that she wouldn't come out the house or wedged herself behind it because he kept violently pecking her.. She's terrified of him so hasn't been able to get near the food or water, we've had to put her in her own coop to keep him away, any thoughts?"

I've not had my first cockerel very long so haven't had this problem yet (although mine seems to dislike one of my birds too, but nothing like so severely) - I didn't realise cockerels did this, I thought it was hens who picked on each other?? Can anyone help please?

    Thx

How many hens are running with the cockeral? The more the merrier, for fertility it is around 1 cockeral to ten hens. However, if you only have one of two hens and it is a particulary dominate cockeral then you get issues.

As before (in a previous thread) how old is the cockeral? If it is less than a year old and shows aggressiveness then you already know the answer.
