  • Runner Beans ... AGAIN!!!

Afternoon Gardeners, I was chatting to a pal of mine last night, you lkmow the type - they know EVERYTHING there is to know about gardening, Veggies, Fruit, Roses and every other thing that grows in the ground. I mentioned that I'm about to plant my young Runners in tubs, whoich to my surprise she agreed can be done, but then when I mentioned that some are about 7" tall with red flower buds on the top, her reaction was: NIP 'EM OUT NOW!! This can't be right, surely??? Image added. Advice needed please..

I only nip the top of my runner beans when they are close to reaching the top of the canes.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

      Hiya Alison,
YEP - That's what I've always thought! I wonder where she got that idea from? Anyway - in the tubs they're going, within the next few days. I've managed to source 5, 16" tall x 13" diameter. I might manage 2 canes in each, shouldn't I?

      Thanks,

      Ange

Runner are thirsty plants and they will be very top heavy with two plants per pot, I would put one cane/plant per pot. I nip the top of mine when they re h the top of the cane too.

Taken from the hrs growing guide

Another way to improve flower set is to pinch out the growing tips of the plants when they are 15cm (6in) high. The flowers formed on the resulting sideshoots usually set better.

Your friend I am sure has good intentions, if you nip out the growing tip, like many plants it encourages a bushier plant.

This happened to me by accident,I lost the growing tip of a runner bean plant,it's about 10inches tall, think it was a snail. So I left it in the blow-away grow tent & it's produced a side shoot.

I wouldn't nip out the growing tip, but I would be very tempted to remove the flowers. My reasoning being the plant is to small to start producing good beans.

Yes, I agree. It's unsual for runners to start flowering at only 7", they are probably a little stressed and need to be potted on.

Morning all, and thanks for your comments/suggestions. I think I'll experiment! I'll plant 'em up, then nip out just ONE plant and see what happens!

                    Happy Tuesday,
