  • Best Seed Compost (In your opinion).

I know it's late in the day to be talking about seed compost but having had mixed results using MPC I just wondered what your favourite seed sowing mix is..............Cheers.

I am using Gro-Sure fine grade seed and cutting compost. Quite impressed with it, got one or two twiggy bits per bag if that.

For seed compost I use the old nutrient deficient MPC from last years annuals or potatoes.

My favourite this year has been coco coir,it didn't turn into a clump of solidness like other seed compost I used. Also excellent with pea germination as it was more aerated,it didn't hold the water like a mud pudding.

Having also had the lump of solidness issue with seed compost, I just use ordinary MPC (Westland) now.

I recently bought one of the verve 125L seed compost from B+Q and I'm very, very impressed with it.

Almost used 3/4 of it and haven't found any large objects in it (woodchips etc.)

MPC for me too - any lumpy bits are just thrown back in the bag and used for other potting requirements.

another one here, have been using it for a few years now,for fine seeds sieve it,any remaining larger bits just gets put in the bottom of larger containers,so no waste

I'm on my second 125l bag of the verve MPC. It's not quite as good as the first bag in my opinion: it's got more twiggy bits in it and has a strong "piney" smell. Once seived though it's still got a really nice texture probably because of the high peat content.

I'll use MPC for easy seeds but go back to a John Innes Seed Compost for trickier stuff. This isn't as good as it used to be either, I'm finding it's best to seive it before use and even to add more sharp sand to open up the texture a bit and stop it going hard in the seed trays. But it's easier to water accurately than MPC and the fungus gnats ignore it.

Well, I have been doing the same as many of you.........riddled MPC. So I can only assume it is me who is doing sommat wrong............would love to know what mix commercial growers use, when you buy plugs they are miniature plants not just a leggy seedling................I could make a fortune selling leggy seedlings............

I have been using New Horizons MPC, not very impressed with the results so far, so picked up a bag of Jacks Magic at B & M the other day, and so far I have had 100% germination with my lettuce and cabbage seeds, was only getting about 70% with New Horizons.
