Hi Paula and welcome to the Forum. If you tell what you'd like to grow, we can advise you on how to start them off. Some seeds are better started in trays under cover, others can be sown direct.

      Hello and welcome!

As veggiechicken says, it rather depends on what you want to grow.

Also, while it's great that you're thinking about winter veg, there is still time to sow lots of summer and autumn veg to get a crop before winter too.

Hello and welcome to the vine Paula like VC says let us know what you plan to grow some things like carrots and parsnips need to go straight into the soil but things like cabbage and courgettes can be started in modules or pots.

Hello Paula, welcome to the vine. Congratulations on your new plot I start most things in modules with the exception of parsnips and carrots and very occasionally beetroot, turnips and lettuce. Everything else I start off in pots and pot on when they are sturdy enough to withstand the slug attacks. I don't like the hit and miss of sowing direct with seed. If they are in modules I can fill the row with the correct spacing, no need to thin out and no need to sow more in a patch where some didn't grow. You also have the advantage of plants several weeks further down the growing stage waiting in the wings to be planted when room becomes available.
What are you thinking of growing? Some photos of your plot would be great - they are a nosey bunch on here
