  • Can anyone identify this plant please?

I found this amongst lots of trees but none had similar looking leaves.

I have looked on a few sites but I am still not sure what it is.

    Ta!

Looks like a baby oak tree!

Well I thought that at first but I was thinking that it would be more frilly than pointy!

You know what I mean .

I found it when out walking the dog.

It was growing amongst some overgrown grass that is due to be cut quite soon, so I thought I would rescue it.

Leaf shape may vary with the type of oak? They're coming up all over the garden, in pots and in the GH - where the squirrels have stashed them

We have the same problem but it's the wind and sycamore seedlings that are sprouting up in between paving stones and the bark all over the front garden.

We don't even have any sycamores in the street so they must be coming from the nature area a couple of streets away.

It might be a type of American red oak. The leaf shape is similar.

              Thanks.

Hopefully, if it doesn't die, I will post more pics as it grows.

I am trying to grow a variety of trees in pots, to attract the birds if the new neighbours decide to cut down the hedge.

They have already had it cut right back, so there are no leaves at all on their side. Normally privet grows quite quickly. I am hoping our side doesn't die off as the hedge is one thing that we liked when buying the house.

Privet will be fine. You can cut it right down to the ground and it will bush up again in no time.

As for the seedling, my first thought was hawthorn.

                Endless wonder.

                  Thanks.

You can't tell from the pic, but the leaves are quite a bit bigger than the hawthorns that I saw.
