    How easy is it to make a chicken wire fence?

    Hello all,

    Just been to view (and accept!) my first ever (half) plot today.

    There is fencing (of a sort) on three sides of the plot already. I'm keen to fence off the remaining side - all the other plots on the site are fenced and I think it will look nicer if I do the same. I'm only planning on it being around a metre tall.

    So, I'm thinking all I need to do is scrounge some wood for posts, dig a hole, tamp he bottom of the hole, insert wood and tamp in, then nail chicken wire to it with those double headed nails?

    Am I massively over-simplifying this? I'm not great with DIY!

    I don't know what you mean by double headed nails but I would use these or you could use cable ties or simply tie it with string:

        They were called Fencing Staples in my day...

        Depends on how permanent you want it. I would use postcrete in the holes. And use a spirit level to get the poles vertical and level... Where in the country are you? I'm just doing the fence at the bottom of the garden so have all the kit!

          you'll also need to attach horizontal wires to stop the chicken wire from being 'floppy'. Alternatively horizontal wooden lats taken from old pallets would do

            Cable ties or non rotting string ties are easier to use than staples. If you use staples you could loosen the posts as you hammer them in. The other thing is that if you ram stones in the holes the wooden posts will last a bit linger as any water will drain away

              Instead of chicken wire you could use scaffold debris netting, its cheap, effective and it offers a bit of wind protection.

              Its great stuff and very usefull on the lotty if you have some left over for bean/bird netting, butterfly nets, fleece in winter

              here is an example but depends on how high you want it

                oh forgot to mention you need a sledge hammer for the posts and a good mate with a steady hand or somebody you dont like with an unsteady one
