    small brassicas

    Hello all.
    I will soon be hopefully moving into a little flat that has a little garden (about 10feet by 50 feet) that is mostly south facing.
    I will be setting up a few (ish) 4 ft beds and trying my hand at the square ft method.
    Is there any varieties of small brassicas, ie mini cabbages/cauli/broccoli as I will be mostly feeding myself so more little things will be better then one massive cabbage.
    Is it variety based or can I coax plants into being smaller?

    I grow a small cabbage called "Minicole". Nice small head and not a lot of wasted outer leaves. I think the seed is fairly widely available. Beechgrove experimented with the spacings last year to see how many they could plant in a square metre ranging from 9 to 25. From memory they found that 16 was the best. Could always plant closer and harvest alternate ones to use as greens and let the remaining ones grow on. "Hispi" is another you could try.

        Greyhound is another variety of cabbage that copes with being closer together and I have tried Samantha (a savoy) that does not mind a bit of squishing together.
        However, I gave up buying specific varieties and just put the cabbages, cauli's etc I wanted closer together. You get smaller heads but they still grow OK.

          Igloo is a mini cauliflower. Growing it myself this year.

            Or you could grow kale and pick the leaves as you need them.

                So if I plant standard varieties closer together will they just produce smaller yields?

                  In most cases yes. I have grow cauli Igloo for some years and can recommend it. Calabrese Green Magic is another smallish variety with the added advantage that you get loads of side shoots after harvesting the main head, I grow eight to the square metre. Leek Atal is a summer cropping baby leek and grows well squished together.
