  • 2nd year asparagus advice

    Hello everyone,

My asparagus are in the second year now. I planted 3 purple sprouting (left, front and back and front middle) and 3 normal green asparagus.(right, front and back and back middle)

The purple are growing as I expected them to, in nice thick spears about as thick as my little finger.

The green ones are spindly very thin. are these a female variety and should I dig them up and put a male variety down in place.

am I also right in saying that I just let them grow fully for another season and start cutting next season.

    Thanks

Some varieties are thinner than others.
Can you remember what variety you planted?

Oh yes...your right...leave them til next year!

( having said that...can you REALLY avoid trying one of the larger ones? )

Thank you Nicos, Unfortunately I can't remember the varieties, they were an end of season reduced packet from a local garden centre 2 years ago, I don't think I kept the package unless I have put it in one of those "safe places" so as not to forget where it is!!

I have managed to resist the purple ones which are about 18 inches tall now.

I only have 2 spears per plant ... is this normal??

      thanks again.
