I have a raspberry in a container and after prunning it down last year I now have quite a few shoots coming up. Should I reduce to just one shoot?

How big is the container? I would certainly remove any particularly spindly ones but a reasonable size container ought to be able to support a decent clump. -
Those sound like the new canes, I'm not an expert but if there autumn fruiting raspberries they will bear the fruit this year if there summer fruiting ones next year.

Last year I picked them during the summer so I guess it must be a summer one. Sorry, I forgot the name of it.Comment

Did it fruit nearer to June or nearer to August. Summer fruiting canes will be hard and woody now and bear fruit on these canes. Autumn ones out up new shoots in the spring and fruit on these in the same year. Yours sound like Autumn fruiting ones. How did you decide what to prune out when you pruned it?Comment

Another question about raspberries. I have them in a pot which was next to a small apple tree, also in a pot. Today I noticed in the earth of the apple tree a shoot which looks like a raspberry. Is this possible and if so how does it happen...do they seed themselves?sigpicComment

They ususually spread by runners but I guess if a fruit dropped in the pot it would leave seeds which might germinate. Or even a bird ate raspberries, which passed through the bird, which then left its calling card.Comment
