    General fertiliser for roots, leaves and fruit

    I am new to growing my own and have started out this year with some raised beds totalling about 12 square metres and some pots, containers and hanging baskets. I am growing small amounts of potatoes, carrots, garlic, peas, salad leaves, sprouts, brocolli, cauliflower and tomatoes. I also have some raspberry canes and strawberry plants and herbs.

    I am roughly following the square foot gardening spacings. Is there one fertiliser I can use for all my crops or do I need different ones? Is liquid/water soluble easier to use than pellets?

      Hello and welcome to the Vine. I too have raised beds plus a motley collection of pots, bags and tyres etc and I always use just blood, fish and bone. Last year I made a concoction of comfrey and nettle tea. Stunk to high wotsits but not as good as BFB. We are vegetarians and I always cringe at using it but conscience happy feeds are very expensive.
      I normally just sprinkle the pellets on top of the soil, massage it in and then when I water I know that it is dissolving happily.

        I wasn't aware you could get BFB in pellet form, will have to look out for it.

          I use BFB on most areas before planting out. Fruiting plants eg tomatoes,strawberries,like a high potassium feed once they've flowered,to bulk out the fruit. Bonemeal is high in phosphorus for strong roots & high nitrogen feeds are good for greens eg lettuce. I use a few different feeds.

            BM it was originally powder but after living in a damp bit of 'under sink' it managed to lump it self together.

              Thanks - I've ordered some blood, fish and bone. I like the idea of using an organic traditional fertiliser.
