I have no idea why this happens as I do not over water or expose to harsh sunlight but I have potted on kale seedlings and they are starting to turn white at the end of the leaves and withering. It has happened too many times :-(

What compost are you using? How much light does your green house get?
Remember that it's early days yet and things are growing slowly even though we are having good temperatures throughout the days it has been very cold during the night and early morning.
Are they actually withering or just at a stand still? Photos of the plants would help.Comment

Surely water is water from above or below. I don't let them get in direct sunlight.

The compost looks very wet to me. I think that if you water from below the roots can take up what they want. Having said that, some of the seedlings look very healthy to me

Ok, perhaps I am panicking a bit. They have just been watered from below hence the wet compost. It's happened a few times in the past with dire results.Last edited by Marb67; 14-04-2015, 05:53 PM.Comment

I can see a few white patches on the seed leaves but as Scarey has said they all look healthy. Stop looking too closely

is it just the first seed leaves,i personally would let them dry out a bit,then only water from the bottom,it is no matter that the top is dryish,as long as the roots are damp and not stood in a permenant water bath,try not water unless they are dryer,as this causes rot,plus could they have had to much water and washed the nutrients out,hence the paleness,someone correct me if am wrong.sigpicAnother nutter ,wife,mother, nan and nanan,love my growing places,seed collection and sharing,also one of these

I don't think Marb is alone in worrying about his plants, but I think that is half the problem. I used to go out and water my seedlings religiously only to find that more would succumb to harm than the ones over the plot that got less care. At the stage Marbs are at, I would have repotted up to the first true leaves as well purely because they look a little leggyLast edited by Greenleaves; 14-04-2015, 06:54 PM.Comment

Thanks for the photo Marb - it really does help To me, it looks like the seedling leaves are dying off (as they do) but the new, proper leaves are healthy.
Like GL, I pot everything up to its seed leaves, as it gives the seedlings a bit more stability in the pot and, as you know, tomatoes and some of the cucurbits will throw out new roots from the stem. Every little helps
