  • Mould on my compost

I potted up some Sunflowers last week. In the last couple of days a small layer of mould has started to grow on top. I've been taking it off which seems to stop it but then the next day another plant gets it.
The plant aren't be over watered I only water them once the pot feel light or the compost looks dry.
I used brand new compost with a small hand full of used compost mixed together.
    Hope someone can help
    Natalie

Could you top dress the pots with some horticultural grit or similiar?

Water from the bottom? Stand in a tray / saucer of water for 5 - 10 minutes. Surface of the compost will therefore remain dry, which will deter mould growth. other than that it is unlikely to do any harm (although it probably would for ungerminated seeds)

I get it every year on many of my indoor grown seedlings, whilst those in the greenhouse are fine. I assume it's something to do with lack of air movement, combined with the 'richness' of multi-purpose. My own mix seed compost (cheap lidl seed compost, mixed with vermiculite and sand... i.e no nutrients!) are mould free.
