  • What kind of spacing for potted broad beans?

    Ello everyone,

I've got some broadbeans (Aquadulce Claudia) and I was wanting to plant them in pots up along my fence. I was just wondering what sort of spacing I should go for?

The pots are 18 inches long x 8 inches wide x 8 inches deep

(Obviously this pot has mibuna in... the others won't and will contain only broad beans)

The same goes for peas, as I have a few of those to plant as well. How many to plant, how far apart etc?

Cheers for the help people. Don't know what I'd do without the wealth of knowledge found on here.

If it was me I would do 3 lots of 1 or 2 lots of 2 per pot as for peas I would do 3 lots of 2 per pot but I have absolutely no grounds or logic for my reasoning hopefully someone sensible will be along shortly

Thanks for the reply, but I don't understand your terminology! What exactly do you mean by 3 lots of 1?

        Cheers though!

At 18" long, I would plant 2 per pot 3" from the edge with a 12" spacing.

Sorry I wasn't very clear 3 lots of 1 is 1 plant put at each end with 1 in the middle so 3 in total. Quite often I plant two plants together - so if I done that I would only do a total of four plants in a pot. Anymore and I think it might be too much. I hope that makes sense

Peas can go in closer together than beans, 5cm spacing between each pea, some won't germinate, you can add more peas later on if there are gaps. Cover with netting coz mice come out from nowhere
