  • What can I put in after spuds?

Ok I have just found out that my 1st earlies (Rocket) will be ready to lift by the end of May.
I am very new (absurdly so) to my allotment and normally grow spuds in tubs so to have a bit of space in the lottie (called Lu Lu) is a luxury.
I don't want to grow main crop as we have alot of problems with nlight so what can I put into my spud space once they have gone? I really want something for winter rather than salad stuff/orientals etc.
Could I think about winter cauliflower?

    Leeks? Garlic?

Can't help with cauliflower, my first year last year was a dismal failure

I am doubting they will be ready by the end of May (that might be the right number of weeks, from planting, but there won't be enough "heat" for them to get to maturity in the normal number of weeks). Or maybe I am just mis-remembering ...

Rocket are very very early though ...

Either way, Leeks may be your best bet. They can be planted until well into June, July probably even.

I planted Brussels sprouts after early potatoes once, the sprouts stayed in pots until space ready. Also because they were tall 10 or 12 inches? I could plant them deep for stability. Brussels sprouts with leeks/onions as a companion helps repel some bugs

You could grow a cauliflower that would be ready In April/May, or a late Autumn cauliflower... there are no winter ones - unless you live in the SW or possibly Kent.

All sorts of winter brassicas could follow potatoes - I plant PSB and last year had good success with mizuna and kohl rabi, which I am still eating. An alternative would be spinach beet or chard if you don't want to plant leeks.

I can't help with the cauliflowers as I have never managed to grow anything even vaguely edible in that department.

French beans, runner beans and beetroot would crop well. Sweetcorn previously sown indoors would also fit the bill for most parys of the uk

                  A couple of other ideas.
Winter Squash if you had good big plants ready to go.
Celeriac or turnips if the'd been done in modules.

The beauty of having transplants ready to go in is they will wait a bit if your potatoes take longer.

PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!
