  • Greenhouse door glass smashed :(

    Hi everyone,

I got a new allotment space recently. The door for the green house was a little rickety from the start, and it recently blew off in the wonderful Dundee wind and smashed. Well, all the glass smashed anyway.

I'm wondering what my options are for fixing it. I have spare glass that's big enough but no idea how to cut it to size.

Another option I thought of was just going all DIY and patching together pieces of clear plastic to fill in the panes. I'm quite in to re/upcycling so this idea kind of appeals to me. I wonder how much heat would be lost in comparison if I did this, and whether it would still function as well as a greenhouse.

So, what do y'all make of my options?

    All the best

I'd cut the glass to fit. If you've got the glass why compromise?

Is the door likely to stay rickety or is that fixable? If its fixable then I would put glass in. If it is always going to be a weak point then something less breakable.

I agree, if you can fix the door get the glass cut to size. If the door is not to be fixed then try a sheet of 4mm polycarb cut to size with scissors.

Thanks for all your replies, helpful as always I decided to go for a mixture of these. I cut out some plastic to use as temporary panes till I (1) work out how to permanently fix the door so it doesn't fall off again and (2) find someone to cut the glass to size. Deary me.

          All the best

I'd go with cutting the glass you have (maybe the shop you bought it from may do this for you?)

The most important thing is to get the hole covered up ASAP, I didn't and ended up with 6 more panes popping

i popped down to my local perspex place and asked for off-cuts, i now have a regular supply and enough to refit my greenhouse. all for the price of a jar of coffee for their lads :-)
