    Farmers Markets

    Hi, my 8 year old son expressed an interest in growing veg this year so I set aside and dug out an area of the garden. He said he might want to sell some of the veg to buy some new football boots and wondered how easy it is to sell veg at a farmers market? Are there stringent laws in place or is it just a case of turning up and selling?

    Any advice greatly received.

        Any scope for selling at the front gate? You may have to pay a stallholder's fee at a farmer's market.

          Has he thought what & when he wants to sell crops?..............how quick does he want his boots?..........

            Couldn't really sell where we live but I'm sure I'll foot the market fee. Just looking to sow next month and harvest back end of summer

              Car boots may be a cheaper option.

                How about a car boot? I know a bit odd but we have a massive one by us and people sell everything there and I mean everything. Buy by the time car boots start he could have some salad stuff ready or wait until he has beans, spuds and anything else he wants to grow and sell.
                Would be cheaper than a market stall.

                  what about asking family/friends/neighbours if they would be interested in buying a veg box from him over a few weeks - no fees!

                    Something I had considered was setting up an honesty box. My 7 year old wants to grow a few things and she can "sell" surplus via that means for pocket money.

                      A few years ago to girls from over the road wanted some money for a trip. They spent saturday morning baking biscuits and buns and went round the house offer them for sale. They did ok.
                      Maybe when your girl has got stuff ready, she could make and put cards through local doors offering the crops.

                        Ah reminds me of when I was little and people came round door-to door offering veggies for sale from a wheelbarrow. I have no idea who they were or where they were from

                          In an area we go walking some kids set up a stall and sell drinks, crisps and fruit. they do seem to get a fair few stopping.

                            I've done that with surplus plants and ask people to put the money through the letterbox. Worked well, too - maybe I'll do it again this year. Might pay for the next seed order

                              Things like tomato plants are easy to grow and very easy to sell.

                              Herbs like mint can be done from cuttings. Both staples of the carboot seller!
