    Onions

    Hi Guys I bought some onions last year in the sale and they have started sprouting in the bags in my pantry.

    Is it to cold to plant them out now? I could plant them in bags in my polythene green house to keep the frost of them?

    What variety are they, and when did you buy them?

      Are they string planting sets? You could always start them in modules, if you subscribe to the GYO mag there is an article in the Feb Issue....if not might be worth a trip to the newsagents

        I bought them in Nov/Dec

        I will check what variety their is one red one white lol.


        They are in like a mesh bag. I noticed this morning they have green shoots about 2-3 inches long!

        I have got the magazine just havnt got round to reading it yet!

          You have nothing to lose by planting them, except space if that is at a premium. Onions are hardy, so frost won't harm them

            I have both Autumn & Spring sets in the ground and are all doing really well so I would get them in.

              I have some bags with compost from last years spuds I will shove them in tomorrow

                Don't forget if you grew spuds in that compost last year it will be short of nutrients, sweeten your compost with something like growmore or BFB

                    Spring!!!!!!!!! That's optimism. Still depths of winter / monsoon season here, autumn sets are hunkering down, worried that spring sets would just rot

                      I have had this happen in the past, I just put the sets in a cool place until the soil was fit to work on, we have had snow most of today.
