  • 9 months as new allotmenteers!

My girlfriend and I started a plot back in May 2014.

When we took the plot it had been mostly left for years to just over grow - a common occurrence I imagine!

The rear third was a jungle. We soon found out that it was the previous owners herb and root vegetable beds and had apparently been burning things in the middle of it for a while too.

We've got common fennel all over the damn thing and those tap roots go incredibly deep in the the clay layer we have about 2 - 3 spades down.

Luckily(?) for a short while one of the older chaps in the community had cleared the other two thirds for a young lad to get some potatoes and onions in it but he'd then not done anything with it either.

This did mean that we did manage to get some veg out without a lot of work and the older guys gave us a lot of help and advice to clear down the plot and get stuff in so we could at least reap some of the benefits.

My girlfriend has done a lot more than me so far! She has been a digging demon and can quite 'happily' dig a whole section for a day whereas I dig for 20 minutes and I want a nap.

So far the plan is to work on keeping it clear of weeds (a pain...) and I want to try out mulching and layering, a la Supersprouts plots, but we have no car at the moment and we're trying not to spend too much money on it.

I've been trying to blog about it as well:

Hi benji and welcome. Nice Greenhouse!!
Grab some big sheets of cardboard from bike shops, electrical goods etc and lay it down over the areas you've cleared until you're ready to plant it. That'll help you keep the weeds down without costing the earth.

      Thanks veggie

      The greenhouse is massive! It's 10' x 8'.

We got some cardboard from a garden center at the weekend. They gave us loads! We did plan to get some of it down today but it was freezing and I was numb.

You can do a lot with a GH that size. Bet you can't wait to get sowing
You're two steps ahead of me with the cardboard, Benji. I hadn't thought about asking for some at a garden centre - good idea

you need no money at all to do lasagne gardening, and if you have a bike with a rear rack you can carry a surprising amount of stuff (I've had 6ft bamboos, fork & spade, and a stepladder on mine, though not all at the same time)

That greenhouse is massive, I'm extremely jealous.

I've booked your site, interested to see how you get on.

Can I suggest that you bury one of your bath tubs, put a plug in it and fill with water and tadpoles! saves a fortune on slug pellets.

                Hey Benji,

You're just up the road from me in Leighton Buzzard, put a notice on freecycle and email a couple of nearby horse studs/riding schools (you can internet search them) and there will be someone desperate to give away their horse manure for free.

I just arranged with a stud (organic feed) a couple of villages along I pass fairly regularly to pop in whenever I need some bagfuls.

Failing that you've got a few dairy farm surrounding you, it may be worth a call?

A fiver a bag for something you can pick up for free is ridiculous around here, I'd totally understand if you were in the middle of a big city and logistics come into it, but they do take the Michael.

                  Love that idea cheapskate!

We already have loads of toads so a little pond like reserver would be great.
