Do you mean sowing, growing on or eventual cropping? Many people use seed compost initially although I just use multi purpose for sowing and potting on. I then plant in my tunnel borders but if you do keep in pots you'll need to regularly feed as any compost will quickly get depleted in nutrients. I boycott the use of peat for environmenta reasons but you'll have to look at your own conscience for that as not everybody is so concerned.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Although people will say peat compost isn't good after I used Westland Jacks Magic last year I'm sure it's some of the best and yet to find a peat free compost to have compost without pieces of wood bark or stones in it or one that doesn't dry out too quickly.

Not used that one but have been using New Horizon for years now and find it very good and also peat free.

I use b and q verve, (other brands are available), but I have always had good results with this.

I've been really pleased with B&Q's compost but really annoyed to find half a clothes peg in the latest bag. :'(

I bought a bag of their peat free a couple of years ago and it was like sawdust, probably the worst I'd ever had. May have improved it by now but I've kept clear and stuck with the New Horizon ever since as I know where I am with it

I also used Jacks Magic last year and was very pleased with the product, yes it contains peat but that's how I like it.

                    1/3 B&Q verve growbag, 1/3 homemade compost, 1/3 vermiculite.

I find the cheapest growbag in that range (£1.70 per bag I think) has a good blend of materials for providing bulk, but if used on it's own the bag is depleted of nutrients way too quickly for heavy feeders like peppers. Probably why it's so cheap.

Use my own mix in varying proportions of soil leaf mould and home made compost depend in what stage the plants are at. They seem to do OK
