  • Waste not want not!!

Having decided I'm not going to waste a morsel of food during the festivities I'm just wondering what people are doing with their excess food over the festivities?

Might be nice to share a few ideas???

    so far, I've...

-cooked the left over bones and going to freeze the stock with chopped up bits of meat and veg for a thick, chunky soup for next week.

-Stale dried bread is chopped into cubes and frozen to fry up as croutons for soup.

    - tomorrow I shall make a salmon quiche for freezing using left over salmon, smoked salmon and cooked broccoli.

and so- any ideas you'd like to share????

This season I'm favouring the internal storage method: eating everything.

Like you, Nicos, the turkey bones were cooked for stock to make soup or a base for casseroles, the cooked skin was finely diced and put out for the blackbirds and sparrows (I know, I know, cannibalism, but they like it). The bones themselves were bashed to small pieces with a rolling pin and mixed into the dalek - they decompose quickly.

I keep bread in the fridge so don't have any stale. I did extra veg yesterday to have bubble and squeak today, and that's all the left-overs there are.

Using up your Food surplus is for Life, not just at Christmas
I rarely have any leftover food - any scraps go to the dogs or chooks, last resort the compost bin.

not much left here, the bit of veg left is going to get mixed together then on a baking tray, formed into a round thick thing, covered in cheese, baked in the oven, along with some fresh made wedges, and sliced cold smoked gamon, with the very few baby yorkies,{not, not dogs or chocolate},son has seen the last of the apple pie, think i might have a jacket spud and cheese,

We have some of the usual choccies peeps aren't keen on ...soft centres, so I'm going to melt them down , add cream and have a fondu with them!
It'll be nice to dunk fresh fruit into the warmed chocolate for a change instead of the usual left over fresh fruit salad.

Twas bubble and squeak for lunchtime, cold turkey salad for tea - just enough turkey left for a curry tomorrow
Sent children home with the remains of the cheesecake and hazelnut torte, to stop me scoffing the lot lol

Well I had a Spanish omelette yesterday for breakfast with the left over mash and swede from Christmas day and a little bit of ham from my welsh dinner earlier in the week.

I'm always using up left overs, and what doesn't make it into me, the human wastebin, makes its way into the dog, the canine wastebin. Between us we help keep food waste off the tip.

Well, I've still got the juices from the turkey meat set aside for future chicken gravies. The fat is also set aside as a topper for the dogs biscuits, spoilt pooch that he is. I remember as a kid that was what you had for tea or supper, dripping sandwiches.

I stripped the carcass last night and boiled up the bones for stock, and I'm just about to roll my sleeves up to make turkey pies for the freezer.

For me, making stock and pies is as much part of Christmas as the meal on the day itself. I always think that this is a mark of respect to the bird, that nothing is wasted and he could be hold his head up knowing that he'd not died in vain. I tell the turkey all this as I am up to my elbows in turkey bits - possibly when I've been at the job a little bit too long......
