  • Starting a new veg bed in the summer.

    Hi,

I recently started my first ever veg patch in my back garden and removed the turf off the top and added a bag or two of rotted manure and mixed it in and pretty much planted straight into it (winter onions, garlic, broad beans).

Now I was wondering if wanted to start a new bed in the spring/summer can I do the same? I've read it's best to improve or create beds in the autumn so they are ready for spring....but if I just removed the turf of a new bed and either added manure or fertilisers will this be ok?

I don't want to burn the roots or kill seeds with manure but the above method hasn't harmed what I'm currently growing but if I want to sow seed I don't want to kill them straight off.

    Thank you.

If the manure is well rotted (Black) then you should have no problem. I've planted direct into well rotted manure & had no ill effects.

Is there any reason why you can't start the beds sooner rather than later. Soil conditions may be a factor but if you can get the beds prepared you'll be ready to go when the Spring finally arrives. Autumn and Winter are good times to prepare beds as you aren't busy with all the other jobs which need doing!

Bribe her with a bottle of Baileys (other brands are available) and when she has finished it she will agree to anything.
