  • Local names for grass

I've often wondered what exactly "couch grass" was as it was never a term I was familiar with. It wasn't until I really looked into it that I think the local name for it here is "scutch grass" - which is probably some form of Ulster-Scots / Irish mangling of the original name.

I suspect there are many instances where, even in the relatively neighbourly 4 nations of the UK, different terms apply for the same thing.

They used to call it 'twitch' grass where I grew up - but that was just the polite version
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I used to know it as "twitch", probably because of coming from the north west. But down here "couch" seems to be the commonest name.

Wikipedia says couch, common couch, twitch, quick grass, quitch grass, quitch, dog grass, quackgrass, scutch grass, and witchgrass. Plenty of choices there!

Couch grass here - the Welsh name is Marchwellt which seems to translate as Horse straw.
                Maybe Marchogaeth can help here

I always called it twitch grass in the past but vary more now as people don't necessarily know what you're on about.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
