  • Looks like I can swap now!

I've just realized that I've done more than 50 posts! Horray!

I'm hoping to get my hands on some good old natural seed by spring. None of that hybrid stuff. My aim is to garden as naturally as possible, and collect seed each year to keep on growing year after year that adapt well to the local area. I don't need many seeds as I only have a small patch.

I also have some seeds of my own to swap. So what shall I do, produce a list and see who's interested?

I don't have much to do with seed swapping, but I think as well as the 50 posts you need to be a member for a set period

      Twas as I thought ..........

All members requesting seeds/plants (for swap or SAE) should :

have been members of the Vine for at least a month AND posted more than 50 posts

      Taken from ........ http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...nce_76437.html

so I'm afraid you have a little while to go yet but as they say Tumpus Fugit

Don't worry Snow, it'll take you a week to sort out what you want to do!!
Most people swap their seeds into the Virtual Seed Parcel http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...nce_68032.html and choose what they'd like from the list in the link. When you've done that, and your month is up, PM me for my address and we'll sort it out from there.

Being a newbie I recommend you have a good look round the forum as well as at the seeds in the swap. I done a swap in eagerness, only to read other various posts and find other things I liked the sound of afterwards. Have a good read through some of the threads like the actual seed swap thread or sharing the lurve etc. it is really encouraging to get grapes recommendations, history, favourites etc on some of the seeds. You also start to find grapes that tend to go towards certain veg like nellie-m and two sheds share some great info on beans, scarlet shares info on toms, sarico has introduced carosello and winter toms, etc. etc.

I shall stop waffling, but honestly - go explore

Thanks VC. You're right, it's gonna take me a while to decide what I even want! The VSP looks amazing, an incredible effort must have gone into making it what it is with all the listings etc.

It really is going to take me at least a week, I can see that now. Because I only have a small patch I think having reccomendations is a great help, as i cant try several varieties at once to find out what is good. Love the idea of finding out the history of varieties etc, I am a big fan of history and all that sort of stuff, so I'm going to go have a read. Thanks for the help!

Glad to see you are so excited!

Do remember that the seeds are only there due to the generosity of other Grapes who will no doubt be equally excited about any unusual seeds you are going to donate to swap!

                  Good here ain't it?

As Nicos says, the VSP has been created by the Grapes for other Grapes. We really do Share the Lurve here.
I doubt that any seed catalogue has the range of tomato, chilli and bean varieties that we have in the VSP - not to mention some of the interesting and unusual seeds to be found in the other sections.
Whenever a new seed variety is donated, I get quite excited. I'll have a goggle, see what I can find out about them and get even more excited when someone asks for them and I see those seeds, grown into maturity, entered in the Vine Show. They're like my little babies - and I feel proud

Just found this as I am watching Seans allotment garden, he is going through a seed catalogue and it made me realise I got rather carried away with my seed order back in October... What with free seeds on the magazine and my order I must have around 70 packs of seeds and no lottie yet! (Although I am assured we will have one soon!)

Taterhead - welcome to the club. Only today I got carried away with a seed order myself...

I doubt that any companies' seed catalogue can boast half as many rare varieties as the VSP has. Many of them cannot be bought anywhere but come from seed archives. Swapping is one of the last opportunities to get hold of some really exciting heirloom stuff, as in the EU seed laws make selling lesser known ones very difficult to say the least.

I always enclose some information about the seeds I send in with the packets, and some I also present in my albums (on my profile page, you can set up albums of your own as well or maybe you already discovered that ) My 2014 beans still have to go in there but I'm still busy packing up for the archives I save for before I can think of sending VC more new little babies

(sorry, VC, I couldn't resist! Have a couple of these... fingers still firmly crossed)

I love reading about a particular seed and where it's come from. Several seeds that I've sown that have been saved by you are often chosen because I like the story behind it!

VC - some more from me
