  • parsnip experiment: working!!?!

Hey all. On the 11th November, I put the top of a shop bought parsnip in some wet paper towel, covered it with a plastic bottle and put it on a window sill.
This is what it looked like today... (Bare in mind that that there were just a couple of scraggly roots on the top before)

What do you think I can expect from it?? Should I pot it in soil???
    Thanks x

You can put it in soil, but keep it well watered.
It won't grow another carrots but if you keep it alive, it will produce a good head of leaves ( which will taste a bit bitter)
Eventually it will go go seed and you can collect the seeds to sow.

We grow carrot tops in the winter for our bunnies. They look nice and green on the windowsill too in the depths of winter!

...and when your "parsnip"" flowers expect it to grow around 6ft (it's the big yellow flowering thing in the pic) hope you have plenty of room. They self seed everywhere in my veg ploy

Yup...you can- be it carrot or parsnip!

let us know how you get on!

Personally I wouldn't leave it in water too long because MY carrot tops tend to go mushy

Ooh, another eat your cake and have it :-) . I always find it so unfair that for seed saving one needs to keep the best specimens for seed.
