  • My broccoli isn't flowering

My purple sprouting broccoli is getting bigger and bigger (4 ft tall) yet showing no sign of flowering. It was planted out in May. My garden is south facing and the plot has [plenty of sun but id fairly well drained. I fed it with chicken pellets about a month ago. Is it likely to flower at all or will it just continue to produce more leaf growth.?

I have the same problem, and posted a similar thing but mine is white sprouting. And been in the ground longer.
My plants are now massive but nada
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

Hello peter and welcome to the Grapevine.
It depends on which variety of PSB you are growing, but generally, it isn't ready for picking until the new year.
      Same for yours, Lisa

I know there are some early varieties but usually PSB is a slow growing crop that buds in the late winter and early spring. It take up a lot of space for a long so needs planting where it don't matter.

Mine is the standard variety and never sprouts until about April or March at the earliest. Unless you're growing a short season variety then you're supposed to pick the year after planting.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Normal purple sprouting broccoli doesn't produce flowers until the following spring and is a biennial (two year) plant. There are a few new varieties which will flower during the first summer or autumn, but these are something of a novelty.

The crop from white and purple broccoli is well worth waiting for as the large plants produce an abundance of fresh greens at at a time when little else is available and go on producing for several weeks.

Don't complain about it! You will appreciate the harvest from these all the more at the end of a dark and depressing winter when we have little else.

Whilst it takes up space for a long time it is worth the wait

The wind blew mine down and i got sick of waiting so I'm just harvesting the shoot tips as they are. Very tasty even though there is very little sign of purplishness!

Don't waste the stems either - if you peel the tough outsides off thick stems there is quite a bit of very edible inside, which tastes great.

Thank you everyone for your really helpful comments. Looks like it's a question of watch this (rather large) space!!

Sounds good. Like a cross between PSB and asparagus!

I grow two types of PSB, early sprouting; a slow growing type which develops into massive plants and flowers around late March early April and is very welcome. The second or summer/late sprouting I am harvesting at present. So it depends on what type you planted.
I usually stake the early sprouting as winter gales can rip it out of the ground.
                        I hope this helps.
The early PSB is staked in the pic the rest are summer types.Pictures taken on Monday

Hi everyone, regarding my non sprouting broccoli, it continues ti grow (about 5 feet tall now!) but still no signs of flowers. Shall I continue to wait. Here's a couple of photos of the centre of the stem[

Did you find out what variety you are growing? If it's the normal stuff then it isn't meant to sprout until the year after planting. Read the posts above again and stop panicking

I ended up with two varieties from one packet...B&Q.
One is shorter and more purple tinged and is just starting to sprout it's spears I think.
The other two are greener, taller, and still not producing.
Mine went in the ground late, and I'm not expecting anything until around March.
