    A question from moi?

    You may have noticed, I like to experiment.

    I still have quite a lot of shallots stored. I usually plant my shallots sets in February and the ones I have are from shallots planted last February.

    I know certain types of shallot are usually planted in Autumn but what will happen if i plant some of mine in Autumn?
    Is it only certain types that overwinter do you think?

    I just wondered whether anyone else had tried this and what were the results.

    Whatever the reply, if any, is, I am going to plant half my sets soon and the rest in February as an experiment!

    I've no idea of the answer but I have some saved shallots planted out and in the green already. They were too small to eat so I planted them.
    Doing the same with some onions too Even if they bolt, I can still eat them young.

      Oh.........its happening veggie, just wanted to know whether others had had success before!

        Always assumed they weren't hardy enough to cope with the worst of winter but probably OK for a mild one.

        Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

        Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

          Over the years, I have keeping smaller shallots and replanting them, and I would think at this stage, there are a few varieties in there of both spring and winter types..
          However, I always just bung them into ground in October..
          No dead ones yet anyways
          I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

            I think I've made a bit of a bobo and planted my sets too early. As I am stioll a novice I stuck them ibn in September and I now realise that this may mean that next year they may bolt and go to flower.

            Should this happen I shal
            A) Harvest the flower stalks an cook them in a stir fry
            B) Convince everyone that this is in fact what I intended from the start (considering the fact that this year I've introduced ny family to eating the tops of turnips and radishes, the leaves of cauliflowers and the roots of parsley I think that they've given up predicting what I may bring forth and just go with the flow and hope it doesn't kill them - so I might just get away with it)

              Do let us know what happens to them, Jay-ell! Assuming they survive the winter I would go for both A and B.

                Shallots? Spring onions? Are they the same?

                I have spring onions that I shovelled out of one garden bed, and forgot to plant again. So two lots in a group and they are still going fine.

                I planted out another group, along the edge of the garden, and they are going gangbusters.

                So I'd say yes, they'll be fine!

                  No they're not the same, certainly not in the UK but I think the US gave different names (same as they call coriander cilantro and courgettes zucchini). Spring onions are the relatively quick growing by with a mild flavour that we eat in the green. Each one forms a single onion which isn't really given the chance to swell before eating. They are grown from seeds. Shallots have a longer growing season and are dried like onions for winter eating. A single bulb can be grown from seeds but it is more common to grow from setts. A single sett will divide into several shallots which are peeled and usually used in cooked dishes.
