  • Wild flower sowing.

I want to sow some Sarah Raven wild flower seeds. The packet says August/Sept but as I'm in Sussex I think I'll be ok. I was going to just broadcast them very sparingly (as Monty suggests) but then cover the small area with porous weed suppressent for winter as a lot of dandelions etc appear if I don't regularly weed it. Lifting it next year when the weather starts to warm up. Does anyone have an advice or do you think that's ok. Does anyone think the summer sowing is preferable?

The covering won't do your wildflowers any good, it doesn't distinguish between them and weeds. So either sow now and leave the cover off, or cover the bed till Spring and then sow.

You'll have greater success if you sow them into cell trays, then transplant in the spring

It's called "suppressant" because it stops things growing ~ it doesn't care what's underneath, if you block the light they won't grow.

There's no point at all sowing them now if you're not letting them see the daylight until spring.
