  • Homemade Gas Bottle Log Burner

Looking forward to a cosy winter at the plot, just need to finish the fireplace and decide whether I want to paint it or not.

Lol, when I read the title I was expecting something along the lines of the horror stories I used to get from DIY customers of what they had done because they were being cheapskates or trying to just not do properly (I worked for various plumbers merchants)

    But I likes

I definately done it because I am a cheapskate, could have bought one from ebay for £80+. So far this has cost around £20 (2 angle grinder disks, thermal cement and door sealant)

Ah there is a difference you are upcycling the DIYers I got either didn't want to pay a plumber and it usually led to paying more or they were creating something that did not exist for a good reason.

Like heating water via a BBQ for a shower in a caravan but not allowing for all necessary stats and expansion etc or the constant heating and cooling (extreme temp) of soft copper on the BBQ........ nee nar! nee nar!

But anyways..... I personally wouldn't bother painting it

It does look good and like the others I wouldn't bother with pain go for the rustic look instead.

                  Paint? Paint!?

It needs black-leading to give it class, and also shine

Get out the Zebo and some rags and give it a bit of elbow grease

Looks good but would look better with a black finish.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Excellent job............think I would find it a bit nervy making sure it was completely empty & washed out.

Yeah Bigmally, it is nervy and I should point out to everyone that.......

Safety is a BIG issue if you plan on making one of these, LOTS of research/reading required on how to be sure you have expelled all the gas from the bottle prior to cutting. If you are not sure DON'T DO IT!

Re painting, its pointless because it will just burn off at the first use, black lead or special heat proof paint
(which needs curing in an oven)is the only way to go. I would try the black lead or nothing. You have made a great job of it by the way.

Thanks Bill. We looked at paint last week in the stove shop, it's quite expensive. Think we might need to live with it the way it is for a while yet although I do like the idea of matt black.
