  • Is plastic bad for the ground?

Hi, I've got a large plot that I'd like to cover some of to stop the weeds until I'm ready to plant next year. My f.i.l is a screen printer and can get massive sheets of plastic from his work. I thought maybe I could use these but then worried whether it would be bad for the ground?? Probably not but I wanted to check!!

Plastic can break down so you end up with bits everywhere but the main thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't let water through and slugs hide underneath. I prefer a porous membrane or, for a cheaper solution, go for sheets of card and newspaper which can usually be scavenged from shops or work places.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

As Alison says large sheets of plastic will stop water and light getting through and kill everything beneath it... including the soil, worms, microbobes... everything!

I am not keen on such practices unless you have really bad perrenial weeds and land you can kill off and then spend a couple of years bringing back to life.

If you must use plastic I'd cut it into small squares so water can run off into the ground. And only leave it there for a few weeks at most?

Sheets will act as kites if they're not fixed down.
You could line your shed though if he has some correx.
